As the title states, I'm a complete noob. I managed to get my server up and running with Apache2, MySql and PHP. The problem is, it is wide open. I have read a few articles here and there and made a few changes. But I'm sure it's no way near enough to keep the 12 year old down the street out. Not that there is anything in there for anyone to feel proud about getting their hands on.
